Background Each year ADFA runs an Open Day in a similar vein to civilian universities involving the entire ADFA staff and students. The day has family, friends and interested prospects attend to view facilities, equipment and live demonstrations. Approximately 10,000 people visit each year including VIP guests. This day also coincides with many other Canberra based university Open Days.
Since 2015, DFR has run a competition whereby entrants enter to win a VIP experience at the Open Day. The objective is to generate awareness of the Open Day amongst the target audience (and their influencers), encourage young people to attend the Open Day and ultimately increase ADFA applications for DFR.
Last year’s competition ran for two weeks and saw over 2,000 entries with approximately 300 of those going on apply for ADFA.
ADFA Open Day Competition 2019 To enter the ADFA Open Day Competition 2019, you are must take an online quiz and answer in 50 words or less, 'What makes you a future leader'.
The VIP Prize is a 2-day, all expenses paid trip to Canberra which includes:
- Flights and accommodation for 3 x winners and a friend/guardian
- DFR Merchandise pack o VIP activities may include:
- A tour of the UNSW Canberra facilities
- Experience on a flight simulator and a simulation firing range
- Ride in a military helicopter
- Exclusive one on one time with ADFA Midshipmen and Officer Cadets
- Explore a range of advanced military equipment
This project was a large undertaking with numerous stakeholders including ADFA, DFR Public Affairs, a third-party PR agency, military support, UNSW Canberra and our creative agency, VMLY&R. With support from the Brand Portfolio Manager, I was able to lead this project and deliver high-quality results.
This year's competition ran from the 18th July - 31st July, and was deemed a huge success. Some key highlights include:
- 40% increase in total number of competition entries in 2019 (3865 entries) compared to 2018 (2764 entries). - 100% of winners and guardians who attended the event rated their expeirence as 'Excellent'
