James Vincent McMorrow’s upcoming album We Move features the singer songwriter’s signature airy falsetto placed alongside a deliciously unique addition of hip hop and synth beats. Entrancing and ambitious, this album draws out a different side to McMorrow that is bound to intrigue those who are lucky enough to hear it.
I personally know of McMorrow’s music from his 2010 debut album ‘Early in the Morning’ which was filled with dreamy folk songs that transported listeners to some other worldly place. And while he dropped out of my radar for a while, the music from We Move has definitely put him back on my map. Collaborating with some of the music world’s most prolific producers such as Nineteen85 (Drake), Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Years & Years), and Frank Dukes (Kanye West, Rihanna), ‘We Move’ elevates McMorrow’s vocals with dope beats inspired by hip hop, soul, and blues.
It is difficult to pick a standout track from We Move because each song is strong enough to stand on its own. ‘One Thousand Times’ fills the room with hefty percussion, an incredible gospel choir bridge and 80s dance vibes. Meanwhile in ‘Lost Angles,’ McMorrow’s emotional delivery will send shivers down any listener’s spine. My personal favourite is ‘Get Low,’ which makes best use of McMorrow’s smooth vocals, and contains the right amount of bass, gritty guitar solos, harmonies and synth. It’s the type of song that I would play during a midnight drive around the city.
Creating a new sound and vibe was a bold, yet necessary move for McMorrow. “I grew up wanting to write songs like Neil Young but produce them like The Neptunes,” he says. We Move certainly connects emotional personal experiences with McMorrow’s love for hip hop. The result is a stunning collection of new music that showcases the Irish singer’s musical versatility, and his impressive growth and development as an artist.
We Move is an impressive chapter in McMorrow’s musical career. Already adored by fans all over the world, this album is sure to make waves and entice listeners old and new.
